We all have those shit days (especially on a Monday) where we lack motivation, feel like the whole world is against us, and there’s no way out of the shitty situation we’re in at the time. Music is definitely one of my favourite healers for when I’m feeling low. Here are my top 5 motivational tracks.

  1. Sounds of blackness – Optimistic
“You can win, as long as you keep your head to the sky” – these lyrics have helped me many a time. I haven’t assigned myself to any religion, but I do believe positivity brings positive outcomes and even though when I keep my head to the sky, I’m not thinking of the same God they’re thinking about in this song, I can definitely relate.
  2. Wretch 32 – I Can’t Stop
This is where I slip in to my “road man” alter ego, i’ve never had to jump on the block to make extra pees, but we most of us can appreciate having to slog away in some sort of shitty job just to make ends meet.
  3. Kanye West – Can’t Tell Me Nothing
I appreciate every single lyric in this song. Kanye went in, every time I sing it I gather my imaginary haters around in a circle & perform it to them via my invisible microphone. Really it’s that little voice in my head that doubts me that I’m singing it to, but either way, makes me believe anything is possible.
  4. Donae’o – I
This song is more up beat, definitely had to be put in this list just for how bubbly the beat is. In this song Donae’o sings about how he’s having a bit of a shit song, asks God for a bit of help and God tells him he needs to save himself. We all need that kick up the backside every once in a while. Help only comes our way when we want to help ourselves.
  5. Goapele – Closer
This is the mellow song, simple and repetitive lyrics, but still effective. “I’m moving higher, closer to my dreams” she sings over and over, I’m sure if we all kept saying this to ourselves and focused on the positives rather than the negatives in life, we would definitely move that one step closer to where we want to be.
